The credit union industry has always had a powerful story: people helping people.
For more than a century, that mission has guided how credit unions serve their members and communities. But today, something important is changing.
The industry is being asked a new question:
Can we prove it?
At the 2026 Governmental Affairs Conference, I had the opportunity to discuss a question that has been stretching my thinking:
What would happen if credit unions disappeared tomorrow?
It’s an uncomfortable question — but an incredibly powerful one.
Because when you ask it, the answers become very clear.
Members would lose access to:
Affordable transportation financing
Stable housing options
Emergency savings support
Retirement pathways
Debt management guidance
Credit health improvement
Financial resilience
These are not abstract ideas. These are real outcomes credit unions deliver every day.
Yet most credit unions measure success primarily through internal metrics — loan-to-share ratios, net interest margin, and other operational KPIs.
Those numbers are important.
But they don’t answer the question regulators, policymakers, and communities increasingly care about:
How are credit unions improving people's lives?
That is why I developed the Credit Union Power Framework.
The goal is simple:
Move from mission stories to mission evidence.
Credit unions already create an enormous impact.
Now it’s time to measure it, demonstrate it, and accelerate it.
